In the Classroom

Hopefully for those wishing to progress, you will have a Deaf tutor who uses British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language.  You have paid good money for your course.  You should therefore expect the best quality tuition that is available to you. Deaf Perspective insists that all its tutors are Deaf.  We feel that this is the most effective method to assist those learning this unfamiliar language.  Such “native users” will automatically and effortlessly use the correct mouthpattern and facial expression with the correct sign.

Both tutor and students should be expected NOT to be using their voices at any time when in class.  This is by far the best way for students to learn BSL, it forces them to remember and use their signed vocabulary.  Sounds scary, but you will love it.  You will learn so much!

The seating arrangement is different from what you will probably be used to.  Students are usually seated in a semi circle so that they can see each other and the tutor.  This is your first lesson in Deaf Culture.  BSL is a visual language therefore everyone has to be easily visible.  Seats should ideally have no armrests, they will impede movement slightly and could affect your use of signing-space.  Also, there is nothing worse than constantly bumping your elbows when signing.
