ESW - Education Support Work

image of group.There is significant variation in service provision to Deaf Students within colleges etc. This includes, not only the signing skill level of the ESW, but also and what roles the Students, Support Services and Teaching Staff expect them to undertake. Education Support Workers often find themselves working in isolation, without the opportunity to discuss and confirm subject specific vocabulary, contexts and problems.

Course Aims
The course aims to ensure uniformity of service, by providing participants with a professional qualification which includes language development, up to SVQ Level 4 in BSL. Participants will have full access to an online glossary of Subject Specific Vocabulary. The course will also provide a framework to network with other ESWs, and to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the ESW.

Qualifications and Progression

Qualifications:
Successful completion of this course will result in the following awards.
SQA Custom Award Communication Support Work / BSL Level 3
Signature/CACDP Level 3 NVQ British Sign Language

Progression:
The above qualifications will allow participants to apply for the following career routes:

Signature/CACDP Interpreter Units,
SASLI as a trainee interpreter
Practicioners may also choose to join the NRCDP or Association of Communication Support Workers

Who is it for?
This course is aimed at those individuals who have passed BSL Level 2 and above, who are seeking employment in educational and communication support within the Deaf Community. It is also aimed at existing Education Support Workers. Potential stakeholders include Colleges, Universities, Hearing Impaired Units within schools and also individual students.

Course delivery
Students will attend 18 full-day (Saturdays) sessions, over the duration of the course. These sessions will consist of a mixture of classroom and workshop learning. All modules will be delivered by fully qualified BSL tutors, Lecturers, Student Support Service Personnel and SASLI Interpreters, dependent on module content.
