Developing Awareness and Communication with Deaf and Deafblind People (DAC1) - CACDP Level 1 &
British Sign Language - BSL - CACDP Level 1 - Combined

Course description:
The full title of this course is: Developing Communication and Awareness with Deaf and Deafblind People and British Sign Language for Business Users (Combined) - Level 1 Certificate in Developing Communication and Awareness with Deaf and Deafblind People

To give candidates an introduction to, and a basic knowledge of, the whole range of D/deaf and deafblind people (i.e. deaf, deafened, deafblind, hard of hearing, Deaf BSL users, Deaf visually impaired, blind hearing impaired and people with congenital deafblindness). It assumes no previous experience or knowledge.

Candidates must achieve both units below for the full qualification. Units may be taken
separately and in any order.

By the end of the course candidates should be able to:

K101 - Deaf and Deafblind Awareness
• Describe types of deafness and deafblindness
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Deaf and deafblind people’s preferred communication methods
• List acceptable terminology
• Meaning of discrimination
• How to avoid difficulties that affect deaf and deafblind people’s access to communication
• Describe the range, benefits and limitations of Technical Aids to Communication (TAC’s)
• Identify and using appropriate Language Service Professionals (LSPs)
• The national organisations working with deaf and deafblind people.

Assessment: Externally assessed written paper

Recommended Learning Hours: 10


T101 - Communication Tactics with Deaf and Deafblind People
• Basic skills for communicating with deaf or deafblind people
• Understanding of how and when a range of tactics can be used to communicate with deaf and deafblind people.

Assessment: Internally assessed practical skills

Recommended Learning Hours: 10 (includes 3-4 hours pre- and post-course study).

It is aimed at those who have either little or no Sign Language skills and are seeking formal qualifications for employment etc.

By the end of the course students should be able to:

- conduct a basic conversation with a deaf person using British Sign Language (BSL)
- Identify and use simple, commonly used expressions, question forms and conventions associated with BSL.
- Request and provide information appropriate to the context.
- Articulate the language clearly enough so that a sympathetic user of British Sign Language (BSL) would understand the candidate questions and contributions.

Certification:
This course is accredited by the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP). This certificate consists of 3 units: - BSL 101: Introduction to BSL - BSL 102: Conversational BSL - BSL 103 : BSL at School, College or work plus K101 & T101 (as above).

Entry requirements:
It is aimed at those who have either little or no sign language skills and are seeking formal qualifications for employment.
